My Contributions
My involvement started early by creating a site-map and wireframes to show where all the information on the site would be displayed.
Working with the client, I created a few concepts and fleshed out the full site once the direction was approved. I designed brand assets on each page and stuck to the brand guidelines.
Accessibility & Usability Enhancements
Challenge &
Business Goal
While the Halloween Horror Nights website provided a visually immersive experience, accessibility and usability issues limited engagement for users relying on assistive technologies. The goal was to enhance inclusivity, improve navigation efficiency, and ensure compliance with WCAG standards while maintaining the brand’s dark, eerie aesthetic.
Research & Testing Approach
-
Accessibility Audit: Conducted a manual + automated assessment against WCAG guidelines.
-
Usability Testing: Performed an unmoderated task analysis using Fable Engage to identify pain points.
-
Key Metrics Analyzed: Navigation ease, readability, interaction efficiency, and screen reader compatibility.
Findings & Insights
✅ Navigation Issues
-
Screen reader users couldn’t differentiate HHN’s navigation from Universal’s main site.
-
Fix: Implemented ARIA labels to clarify structure for assistive tech users.
✅ Icon Accessibility
-
Ticket icons lacked alt text, creating confusion for screen reader users.
-
Fix: Ensured all icons/images had descriptive alternative text.
✅ Readability & Visual Hierarchy
-
Black background with white text was highly praised for readability.
-
Next Steps: Maintain strong contrast for future Universal projects.
✅ Map Usability Issues
-
Location identifiers were too small and difficult to distinguish.
-
Users struggled to pinpoint their exact location.
-
Fixes:
-
Increased map and marker size.
-
Introduced color differentiation for better visual separation.
-
Changed the bird’s-eye view to a more immersive, interactive perspective.
-
Added clickable location markers for instant information, reducing user frustration.
